Chapter Fourteen

“Mr. Townsend! You peeked!”

“Peeked, I? Never.” His tone could be interrupted as teasing, but Jillian knew something wasn’t quite right.

“Oh, come now, Mr. Townsend. It is impossible that you have just pulled the rampant stallion after shuffling the cards so thoroughly.”

“As I said before, Miss Dearborne, it is my card.”

Miss Dearborne held out her hand. “Give me the card, Mr. Townsend. You will have to choose another.”

Bradley made to protest.

“I will have to agree with Miss Dearborne, Mr. Townsend.” Jillian couldn’t help but chime in if only to assist in raising his hackles.

“I think he knows his cards so well that he can tell which card is which by merely looking at the back,” Miss Van Amberg added in a joking yet accusatory tone. “Perhaps we should blindfold him.”

Jillian agreed, but Miss Mary-the-Dull stopped her by placing a hand upon Jillian’s. “Don’t you feel that it would be rather scandalous of your guests to do such a thing, especially to a member of the opposite sex?”

Upon opening her mouth to speak, Jillian experienced a flash of memory. She was in Bradley’s room back in America, sprawled naked across a mussed bed with her wrists bound loosely above her head by his silk tie.

She came out of her seat, partly gasping for air, partly coughing.

The next thing he’d done to her had been to cover her eyes. And after that…Good God! Why, she couldn’t even allow herself to relive the drunken abandon she’d experienced. And certainly not in front of her guests.

Miss Dearborne took Jillian by the arms to steady her. “Are you unwell, Miss Kelley?”

“Miles, perhaps you should bring Miss Kelley something to refresh herself with,” Mary suggested.

However, Mary’s idea had come too late. In an instant, Bradley was there with a glass of water, holding it up to her lips, his other hand supporting her back. “And a bit of air may also do the trick.” As she drank, he ushered her over to the window and tossed it open. He returned his hand to the small of her back.

In seconds she got hold of herself, downing the entire glass of water. “You are a wicked man, Mr. Townsend,” she whispered harshly. As angry at herself as she was for acting as she had that one fateful night, she didn’t wish for all of St. Helens to overhear what she had to say.

“I, madam?”

“Of course you, who else? You’ve come here to my home, staged scandalous games and intrigues, introduced finer society to your debauchery, and now this. Next, I suppose, you will teach them how to tie someone to the bed!”

Bradley faced Jillian’s anticipatory guests. “She’ll be recovered in no time.” He smiled and turned back to her, his eyes now intense. “I see. You feel that you have fallen from grace and now I am to be punished for it.”

“It wasn’t my idea to bring a blindfold along for the fortune telling!”

“Neither was it mine.”

Recalling the conversation, she froze.

“It was Miss Van Amberg’s suggestion, and an innocent one at that,” he stated quietly.
